In the two trials above that measured outcomes, only one study used tetracyclines in children under 8 years old — and there were no serious side effects. Researchers also have observed problems with prolonged antibiotic use, such as increased resistance, which can also lead to increased drug doses and serious side effects. 2b. The risk of these severe side effects is greater if antibiotics are taken on a regular basis (meaning for extended periods over time) One of the concerns FDA advisory panel, noted by our recent story "The Truth About Antibiotics," was the risk of these severe side effects that can arise from long-term use of tetracyclines. In another study, researchers found that erythromycin-induced cardiotoxicity occurs most often in children who are between ages 8 and 12 years old when taking the antibiotic about 15 days. In the older age groups, these problems are less likely to occur.
