Government would then decide how to use this fund. The panel said that price of clotrimazole should be as high possible with the aim of ensuring that drug reaches as many people possible. The panel suggested that drug should not be made available with the price fixed by Indian Drug Control Authority (IDPCA). The panel also recommended that price of betamethasone dipropionate cream, which was earlier available at Rs 2,750, should be reduced to Rs 2,000. The committee pointed out that price of these two drugs in the international market was as low Rs 1,500 per dose. Patients suffering from malaria, Chikungunya and other mosquito-borne diseases frequently faced difficulty in accessing these drugs as they cost much more in the country. However, as per the recommendations of doctors' committee, cost treatment for people suffering from these diseases should not be passed on to them. The recommendation was in line with the recommendations of National Academy Sciences, which had suggested that the price of clotrimazole should not be more than one-third of its market price. The panel also said drug should be made available cheaper to the poor and most vulnerable sections of society. It also suggested that the cost of drugs should be reduced or made available to all the needy sections of society at a reduced price. The Committee of Experts on Medicines has also recommended lowering the prices of anti-malaria drugs. (ANI)
